As long as I can remember, I’ve always loved yarn.
Reasons I Love to Work with Yarn
There’s just something wonderful about yarn. It’s more than just fiber strands, it’s what you can make with it and when I complete a project, I love the finished fabric.
I really like all the types of yarns from merino wool to cotton, each fiber offers a unique tactile experience. There’s an endless supply of all the things you can make either through crochet, knit and even weaving. It’s fun to experiment with different colors, textures and stitch patterns.

Each project is a chance to learn and grow as a crafter. Sometimes I follow patterns, but other times I like to just freestyle crochet. The half double crochet is my favorite stitch. For knitting, I just like knitting rows without following a specific pattern. When I’m finished with what I made, it’s cool to wear it whether it be a hat, scarf or even mittens!
Therapeutic Benefits
Working with yarn is more than just a hobby; it’s a form of therapy. About five years ago, I experienced a period of trauma which escalated into extreme PTSD. That led to depression, fear/terror and even hearing loss. I’m in the healing process now, thanks to God, my hubby and friends. So, when I’ve had a hard day, picking up my latest crochet scarf that I’m making for my plushie helps calm me down.
From Skein to Success
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a project. It’s hard to explain how I feel when I finish creating something pretty. It’s an incredible feeling. Turning a ball of yarn into something beautiful and functional is amazing! It’s a reminder that I can create something meaningful and lasting.
Working with yarn is more than just a hobby for me; it’s a passion, a love affair, and a way of life. It brings me a lot of joy, reduces stress and makes me feel useful. Also, crocheting or knitting makes great gifts for friends and family.
A few years ago before my injury, I made this beautiful, white wrap for a Sister in my church. She always dressed so classy and elegant and I wanted to make her wrap that was elegant and classy and would go with whatever she wore. I remember taking my time picking out just the right yarn. I think it took me about 3 months to finish it and I wrapped it up and packaged it a beautiful box and the reaction she gave me when she opened it…WOW! I felt like making her 30 more wraps!
As a crafter, making completes me as a person. Having something to turn to that’s not about meeting deadlines, paying bills, running errands, cleaning or washing is its own reward.
