Introducing my New Mini Varmax Sewing Machine

Hi my friends, today’s post is really special! I’m getting into sewing!, or I should say, “back into sewing”. I had a sewing machine many years ago that I purchased from my local thrift store. It was a Brother and a very good machine. I was learning on it with a lady in the women’s ministry of the church I was attending at the time. She was teaching me to make placemats and other home decor pieces.

Unfortunately, after my hubby and I left that church, we lost touch and then my sewing machine broke and I couldn’t afford to fix it. Eventually I lost interest in sewing and just put it on the backburner for a few years.

I’m not sure what exactly intrigued me to get back into it, I guess it came about when I was window shopping on Amazon. I love to window shop and take notes of things I want to add to my crafting collection or our home. I wanted to purchase for myself something relatively inexpensive as a reward for working so hard at my full time job for the month. I think it’s important for me to reward myself with a gift after each paycheck, but sometimes it’s not possible.

Anyway, I was searching the products in the crafting category when this Mini Sewing Machine caught my eye. I started reading more about this model and what I really liked is that it comes with an extension table along with a sewing kit. I still have my sewing kit but I would not turn down more notions to add to it.

I also like that this machine even with the extension table is the perfect size for my crafting table. I won’t need to find room for a sewing table at least for now. And, really I only want to sew simple and small things for my fabric journal, I want to add sewing to my handmade cards and make some things for home decor. So, right now, I’m not looking to purchase a full size machine. That could change depending on how much I like it and how successful I am at sewing.

Anyway, I also saw there were many YT video tutorials on this machine and I watched a bunch before I decided to purchase it. It is very affordable, I purchased my for $39.99 with a 20% off discount and it arrived yesterday!

So, here’s my machine!

Isn’t she cute?! It came already threaded and with a sample piece of fabric so I could practice. Now, it only makes 1 stitch so no fancy stitches like zig zags on this baby and it also doesn’t do reverse sewing but that’s okay. I can lift the presser foot and turn the fabric to reverse stitch.

I think this is a great little machine for beginners or novices like me to get our hands into sewing and even if I end up not using it as much I didn’t spend a lot of money. However, I think I will love using this!

My First Sewing Project

My BFF takes sewing classes in her city, however she is much more advanced than me, I have a lot of catching up to do to get to her level! What we decided to do is sew together (virtually) as she lives a long ways from me.

Our first project is to make a pin cushion! I need one very badly for my needles and pins and we found a couple of quick tutorials for making a square size and a circular one with a button in the center, both are so cute, so easy and so quick.

To get started, I visited my local Dollar Tree to buy some fabric. I didn’t think I had enough in my arsenal. DT has a lot of different colors and patterns and I’ve used these to make a pillow for our bedroom, you can read about it here.

Crafter's Square Fabrics

I LOVE all these bright patterns and any one of them will do for a pin cushion. The light gray fabric on the end I will be saving some thing else. Since I love pink so much I’m going to start with it for my square pin cushion. And maybe the teal green for a circular with a red button for the center of my 2nd pin cushion. I’ll hopefully do a good job to share my progress! 😀

And if you’re new to sewing or curious about this mini sewing machine, check out this tutorial that I found on YT. The creator of the video really goes into detail of setting it up, how to thread it and stitch with it.

I’m excited to get started! Thanks for Reading!
