Hi my friends! Happy 4th of July! I’m popping in with a quick blog post to share these cute patchwork pin cushions I made yesterday. The pattern is very easy from the YT video tutorial below. And you can watch it here as well.
It is a very short but straight to the point video which I love! I used some fat quarter fabrics that were 5-1/4″ x 5-1/4″ from my stash. I purchased some buttons a few weeks ago to add to my collection, 2 I used on the pink cushion, but the white buttons on the black/gray cushion were from my stash. Links to most of what I used is listed below.
My Supplies
- Fabric squares
- Pen to place marks on the fabric
- Mini heat press
- Buttons
- Sewing Machine
- Matching cotton thread/needle for hand sewing
- Ruler
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric clips
- Poly-fil
Instructions
- In a nutshell, I ensured all my squares (2 sheets that were 5-1/4″ x 5-1/4″) were pressed nicely, then with my ruler drew a line from one corner to the opposite corner and cut along that line on both fabric sheets for a total of 4 triangle shapes.
- You then switch one half triangle with another and then place the triangles over each other right sides facing. I added a clip to keep the two fabrics lined up. Then, I sewed a 1/4″ seam allowance on the right side of the triangles. Press again.
- I repeated steps 1 & 2 until I had 2 fabric squares with the different patterns. Then, I sewed a 1/4″ seam allowance all the way around leaving a little opening on the side to turn right side out so that I could stuff it with poly-fil.
Next, I needed to close that opening, so after stuffing it with poly-fil, I hand sewed the ladder stitch and I chose a matching colored thread. I’m getting better at this invisible stitch, I could hardly see any stitches. Lastly, I added the buttons on the top center through the back center and my pin cushions were done.
I liked it so much that I made 2 pin cushions!

I also chose a thread to match the colors of both cushions. I love how they turned out. I plan to make small items like these on my sewing machine as gifts to friends. Plus, this helps me get more comfortable with my new machine!
