Hey friends! Today, I’m sharing my pinky mat that I made for my sewing machine to sit on. I made a bluish teal one a couple of months ago but I wanted to replace it with pink as that is (1) my favorite color and (2) it’s the primary color of my craft space!
The pattern is really easy because all I needed to do was sew 2 pieces of fabric with cotton batting on the bottom. The 2 fabric pieces were placed right sides together and the batting on the bottom. My mat measures approximately 19″ x 16″. I cut my batting to just a little under that.
Then I sewed about 1/4″ inch seam allowance all around leaving an opening on the side about 1-1/2″ or more so that I could turn it right side out.
I pressed it really well with my Cricut mini heat press. And, I learned a tip that if I have stubborn folds, creases or wrinkles, to spritz a little water on the fabric (not enough to get it soaky wet), then press over it and I found this technique worked.
After I turned it right side out, I sewed all the way around 1/4″ inch seam allowance and closed up my opening. Then, pressed it again. The next part was my favorite! I quilted it just sewing diagonally across each side, nothing fancy! But, I got to sew with my walking foot and I used a 110/18 size needle to get through all the fabric and batting. It was such fun and in the end I have a beautiful mat for my sewing machine!

Is it Perfect?
Absolutely not! I made errors in my stitching, the fabric I didn’t cut as straight as it needed to be. However, I’m trying and as a brand new sewist who has never learned this craft but trying to teach herself, I think I’m doing pretty good. And I’m not going to be a perfect crafter but I will do my best and after practice I’ll get better.
What did I learn?
- Start with the fabric cut evenly. If the front doesn’t line up with the back fabric, it will show up in the final project.
- Take my time. Don’t be in hurry to finish something because rushing causes accidents, messes and added stress.
- Don’t look for perfection. Sometimes, an error turns out to be a happy accident!
- Don’t let hiccups get me upset. As I was sewing today, when I forgot to hold my thread to begin sewing, the thread would pop out of the needle and I’d have re-thread the needle. It frustrated me to deal with this but gladly my machine as an automatic needle threader feature. Still, this happens so just re-thread, take a deep breath and keep going. No need to get upset!

In this picture, I hung it up to shoot it straight on. Oh and my fabric came from my local Dollar Tree store. Other products I used are linked below. I’m happy how this turned out, it’s better than the 1st mat I made so I’m making progress.
